Minister of Music

First Presbyterian Church and Second Presbyterian Church of Saginaw, Michigan seek a joint Minister of Music to join their teams. The churches, both of which have been serving the Saginaw community for over 100 years, embarked in a shared music ministry in 2022 and were able to grow their relationship and benefit from the shared ministry.

About the Position

The Music Minister’s primary duty will be to work with the pastors of each church, as well as the Worship and Music Committees, to lead the music during Sunday morning worship services. This includes selecting music for worship, leading the choir anthem, and playing piano and organ accompaniment. First Presbyterian Church features a 1989 Casavant and Second Presbyterian a Cornel Zimmer (Opus 38). The Music Minister will also work to develop bell choirs and other special music offerings based on the gifts of congregation members.

Responsibilities:

● Work with Pastor to select music for Sunday worship

● Hold weekly rehearsals with the chancel choirs of each church and direct them during worship

● Coordinate music for and play during special worship services, including Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve, and others as determined by worship schedule

● Play during weddings and funerals, sometimes meeting with families to determine musical selections

● Build a sense of camaraderie amongst the musicians/singers of each congregation

● Participate in staff meetings and development opportunities

● Attend Worship and Music Committee meetings

● Encourage the growth of musicians/singers within the congregations

● Build community connections through each church’s music program

Qualifications:

● Proficiency in playing the organ

● Proficiency in playing the piano

● Experience directing/coaching vocal choirs

● Knowledge of hand bell choirs and ability to direct them

● Comfortable working in a collaborative, team setting

This position reports to the Heads of Staff (pastors) of each church.

Anticipated minimum starting salary for this position will begin at $50,000, commensurate with education and experience. The position also includes a benefits package featuring health insurance, vacation, and professional development funds.
