Child Care at First Presbyterian Church

Child Care is provided during Sunday School (10:00-11:30 am Sept-May) for children Birth-age 3 and during Worship (10:15-11:45 am) throughout the year for children Birth - age 5.  The care of children is very important to us and we take seriously our role in caring for children in a safe and hospitable environment.

The Nursery is located on the Lower Level, Room 15.  All children are signed in at the Toddler Nursery.  As needed, infants and/or pre-walkers are moved into the Crib Nursery.

Bringing Your Child to the Church Nursery

1. Just inside the entrance to the Nursery, you will find two items which need your attention.

     a. The first time your child comes you will be asked to complete the DATA CARD describing the specific needs of your child.  Please update this card yearly or as your child's needs change.

     b. Each week you will be asked to SIGN IN, identifying your child and yourself.  A pager will be issued to you, in case the nursery staff needs to contact you during the service or program.

2. Once your child is signed in, give the child's personal items to the Child Care Provider or hang them on the hooks just inside the Nursery door.  For the safety of the children, no adults should be in the nursery area other than the Child Care staff.  The staff will meet you and your child at the Sign-in desk and staff will quickly introduce your child to an activity.

Items of Special Note

CRYING

It is very natural for young children to cry when leaving their parents.  Please be assured that the staff is trained to comfort, reassure, and introduce your child into the setting.  Help the staff by giving your child a quick, reassuring hug then allow the staff to take over.  If a child does not calm within fifteen minutes, the Child Care staff will page you.

SICK CHILDREN

The Nursery cannot care for a sick child.  When your child is running a fever, suffering from a contagious illness, or requires special medical attention,  the staff will ask you not to leave your child.  if the child is recovering from an illness but is stable, the staff will attempt to accommodate your needs.  No medication will be administered by the Child Care Provider.

DISCIPLINE

At times it is necessary to intervene with a child who is misbehaving in a manner that disrupts or endangers another.  It is our policy to first redirect the child to a more appropriate activity.  Secondary measures include removal from the situation to a quiet area for a brief period.  At no time will a child be physically disciplined or restrained.

Nursery Staff

First Presbyterian Church employs a Child Care Provider to care for children each Sunday.  This Child Care Provider is familiar with the policies of the Church for the care and safety of children and is training in First Aid and Child/Infant CPR.

In addition, during the Worship Hour the nursery is also staffed by Nursery Volunteers.  Nursery Volunteers serve on a rotating basis and are most often are parents or grandparents of children in the Nursery.  Youth (age 12 and up, with Red Cross Babysitting Certification) will assist with adults in the Nursery.

Child Abuse Protection

This policy applies to children and youth participating in Christian Education programs of First Presbyterian Church and to youth and adults having contact with children or youth within the programs of First Presbyterian Church.

1. No adult/youth is to be isolated (alone in a non-public place) with a child.  Ideally two adults or 1 adult and 1 youth will be with children at all times, and two adults with youth at all times.  If one adult is with children/youth, doors will remain open where the children and adult will be visible to any person passing by.

2. No adult/youth will be placed in a position of volunteer leadership within the Christian Education program who has not been related to this congregation at least 6 months.

3. No adult/youth with a documented history of child abuse or child sexual abuse will be placed in a position of leadership or care for children at any time.

Volunteers working within the Educational ministry of First Presbyterian Church must complete a Volunteer Information Form.

General Information

Procedures are essential in operating an organized and safe child care setting.  Please become familiar with your responsibilities as a parent/guardian when bringing your child to Child care.

1. Allow yourself and your child enough time on Sunday morning to arrive ten minutes before scheduled activities begin.

2. Label all items you bring with your child's name.  Items you need to provide:  diapers, bottled mild or prepared formula, pacifier, extra set of clothing.

3. The decision whether to place a child in child care or to take a child to worship is the decision of the parent.  the Chapel (adjoining the Sanctuary) serves as a Cry Room.  Children who become too restless in worship may be brought to child care as needed.

4. Safety is an important matter to First Presbyterian Church ministries.  Please familiarize yourself with the policies that ensure safety for our children and our volunteers.
